Youth Justice Sport Fund

Aims/priorities: This new fund is being provided by the Ministry of Justice and delivered by the Sport for Development Coalition, led by StreetGames and Alliance of Sport in Criminal Justice.

Funding is intended to meet the following two key goals:

  • Support vulnerable young people, aged 10 to 17, at risk of involvement in crime, anti-social behaviour and serious violence through involvement in local sporting activities.
  • Through capacity building, increase the capability of sport sector delivery organisations to work effectively with their local criminal justice partners, including Youth Justice Services, Police and Police Crime Commissioners (PCC)/Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) structures.

Who can apply? The following types of organisations may apply:

  • Constituted community, voluntary and not-for-profit social enterprises.
  • Community Interest Companies (CICs).
  • Charitable Organisations.
  • Education establishments, for projects involving the wider community.
  • Local Authorities, for projects which are not statutory responsibilities.
  • Leisure Trusts, for projects which are open to local communities and free at point of access.

All applicants must have a constitution or other relevant governing document, a management committee of at least three unrelated members and a bank account in the name of the group with at least two unrelated signatories.

Organisations will be expected to:

  • Be able to evidence an existing track record of delivering sport in communities.
  • Be working with vulnerable or at-risk young people aged 10 to 17 years old.
  • Provide secondary level prevention activities.
  • Be part of a longer term/established offer or have clear exit routes into existing year-round provision.
  • Work with multi-agency partners from across the local area, eg education, children’s services, Youth Justice, Police.

Grant amount: It is expected that the average grant value will be around £20,000, though smaller and larger amounts may also be considered. Applicants should contact the funders in advance if they wish to request a larger sum.
