April 2025 Summit
Our latest Tameside Voluntary Sector Summit brought together more than 80 people from local community groups to share what they are doing, hear from others and get some practical support. Councillor Taf Sharif, First Deputy and Executive Member for Health and Equalities opened the day with a reminder about the importance of the VCFSE sector in supporting the Council's ambitions in the borough.
James Mallion, Director of Public Health Tameside, explained Live Well and the ambition to support community-led wellbeing, and build great everyday support in all our neighbourhoods, and Anna Hynes, Director of Action Together in Tameside, showcased the work we have done as one of the accelerator sites in developing Tameside's Live Well Principles and using storytelling to explain the difference community-led prevention is making in the boroughs. Groups got to discuss and build on these principles and build their own storytelling skills with a practical workshop and take away toolkit from The Saltways.
Sian Goodwin, Operations Manager Action Together in Tameside, introduced our new Tameside Communities Fund and how the final Live Well principles will be the foundations of the fund, while the storytelling training attendees received during the session can help their applications be more accessible and showcase their successful projects.

Feedback from Summit Attendees
"Yesterday was good. I enjoyed meeting old friends, networking with new colleagues and seeing how the groups we run at Richmond Community Centre support the Live Well movement in Tameside. It really brought home the importance the role that the voluntary sector plays in making lives healthier and happier! I have arranged for Agnes from the African history project to come to the Place of Welcome and give a talk on the cotton industry. The talk on film making was interesting, I will need to practice!"
Ken Marks | Richmond Street Community Centre
"I thought the day was very well planned and organised and totally relevant to our sector. It was especially useful to have input into the draft wellbeing principles and consider how our own service matches these. It was also very useful to network with other VCFSE organisations and discuss the challenges we all face, but also connect due to our shared core values."
Particularly useful was the presentation regarding Action Together’s Tameside Communities Fund and how our service already aligns with the Live Well principles. This should enable us to submit a more informed, considered and concise bid for further funding for our service in the future. The presentation was clear and the message very encouraging for all services working at grassroots level.
A big thumbs up to the organisers and to those who attended!"
Suzanne Roberts | Branch Manager, Being There Tameside
"I found the event useful to attend. It's good to have an opportunity to network face-to-face and hear about all the wonderful groups and projects that are happening.
The launch of the new fund is an exciting opportunity for groups of all sizes to gain some financial backing and it will be great to see all the new ideas, and also to fund some already existing groups that might be struggling financially.
Thank you to Action Together for putting the day together."
Ben James | General Manager, The Anthony Seddon Fund.
“It was, as always, informative but it was especially nice to spend time with like-minded people who are providing a wide range of support and services to the communities of Tameside.”
Councillor Jacqueline Owen
"It was a brilliant idea to launch the Tameside Communities Fund with supporting take home information and guidance. Local Community Groups will feel at ease applying for the Micro, Small and Medium grants in the knowledge that Action Together has identified Development Officers to support us in our application should the need arise.
The day itself was well planned in my observation and I came home with a self-made video, following the session on “Creating Authentic Videos using your own Phone”.
A big thank you to Action Together for inviting me. The catering was great and I thoroughly enjoyed the day."
Agnes Fough | Roving Musuem
"I thought the event was well organised with a relevant agenda. Workshop 1 provided some great discussion and brainstorming, whilst Workshop 2 on filming/recording media was very useful and I think everyone would have taken something away from that. I just need to practice it now!
The event provided the opportunity to network with other Tameside groups and organisations, prompting good discussions about what each is up to. Although I have regular contact with some groups anyway, it was good to do."

Inaugural Summit | October 2024
Our first Summit was held in October 2024. Over 30 groups came to listen to stories from their peers about the impact of the work they do, including presentations from CAB, Mind, Anthony Seddon, New Life Church, PAC CIC and ASPYA youth partnership. Attendees also took part in workshops on themes such as Live Well, Children, Young People and Families, Networks, and the Social Economy.
The event was organised in response to feedback that groups were feeling less connected to one another than usual, and a need to remind each other what a fantastic sector we are and how much we do in Tameside. We asked the groups that attended some simple 'state of the sector' questions at the start and presented the findings back to them at the end to show the breadth and reach of the collective in the room. Some things we learnt were:
- £7,828 951 | Funding secured by groups attending the summit in the last 12 months
- 341 | Number of paid staff employed by the groups attending
- 1,204 | Number of volunteers actively supporting groups
- 3,820 | Number of people groups attending the summit work with each week
