Windrush Day Grant Scheme

**Online informational workshops will be held on 2 February and 11 February 2021. Further details can be obtained by emailing mwindrushprojects@communities.gov.uk. Please include ’bidder workshop’ in the subject line.**

Aims/priorities: Windrush Day (22 June) was established to celebrate the large contribution of the Windrush Generation to Britain's cultural, social and economic life. The grant scheme is intended to support celebrations in England that recognise the arrival of MV Empire Windrush at Port Tilbury on 21 July 1948 with 492 Caribbean migrants and the contribution of the migrants who later became known as the Windrush Generation. The Government is providing this funding with the intention of recognising and promoting understanding of their contribution and to make clear to those of Caribbean descent that Government values their enormous contribution to national life and wishes to recognise that contribution. There is particular interest in projects that can:

  • Record the memories and testimonies to preserve and share the stories and experiences of the Windrush Generation;
  • Undertake activities in partnership with schools, for example, assemblies, workshops, education trips and creative project work
  • Organise celebratory events for the wider Caribbean community and the Windrush Generation

This funding will support organisations to deliver projects which they would not be able to deliver without the additional funding they apply for.

 Who can apply? Local authorities, registered charities/community interest companies or community groups with a charitable purpose can apply.

Grant amount: Grants of between £2,500 and £25,000 are available. Bidders seeking funding below £2,500 should contact their local authority to request inclusion in a larger bid. The funding is for activities that will be completed by 31 December 2021.

Application process: An application form and guidance notes can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Deadline: 10 March 2021 (23:59) with notification of successful projects and release of funding in May 2021.
