Aims/prorities: The Road Safety Trust is an independent charitable trust dedicated to supporting projects and research aimed at making roads across the UK safer for all road users.

Objectives of Fund

The overall aims of the Road Safety Trust are to reduce death and injury on the UK roads through providing independent funding for research and the development of innovative approaches.

The objectives of the grant programme are to:

  • Generate new knowledge about what works.
  • Translate ideas into new measures.
  • Influence road safety policy and practice.
  • Support partnership working and collaboration.

There are two strands of funding:

  • Major themed grants for projects which focus on a theme each year. In 2021 the Trust invited applications under the specific theme of 'How can technology be used to reduce road offending and improve road safety?' Information on the 2022 theme will be provided when it becomes available.
  • The Small Grants Programme supports projects on their journey to making a tangible difference on the roads.

Who can apply?

  • UK-based organisations, public and professional associations, registered charities, and university departments may apply.
  • Private commercial enterprises and not-for-profit businesses will be considered for funding as long as their proposed project is charitable, for the public benefit and in line with the Trust’s funding priorities.
  • Applications to the Small Grants Programme will be accepted from local authorities, police forces, fire and rescue services or UK based registered charities, legally constituted not-for-profit social enterprises or community interest companies.

Grant amount: Two levels of grants are available:

  • Major themed grants: between £25,0000 and £200,000.
  • Small grants programme 2022: grants of between £10,000 to £30,000 over a two-year period.

A total of £180,000 is available for the Small Grants Programme in 2022.

Application process: There are two application windows per year:

  • Small Grants Programme applications are open until 26 April 2022 with decisions communicated in June 2022.
  • Main Themed Grants Programme will reopen for applications in September 2022.
