Greater Manchester Answer Cancer Fund

Aims/priorities: The funding is intended to support local VCSE (voluntary, community and social enterprise) organisations to raise awareness of cancer screening and possible symptoms and causes of cancer.

The funding is for events that help increase the awareness of cancer screening as well as boosting the numbers of people signing up as “Answer Cancer Champions” by running local level awareness-raising and recruitment events.

The focus is on three types of cancer:

  • Breast cancer.
  • Cervical cancer.
  • Bowel cancer.

As two of the three cancers only affect women (men can get breast cancer but it is very rare), applications from women-focused organisations and groups are welcome.

Priority during this funding round will be be given to the following groups that have been identified with low levels of cancer screening:

  • Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities.
  • The LGBTQ+ community.
  • People who care for others.
  • People with disabilities.
  • People living with poor mental health.
  • Women's groups or Men's groups
  • Communities from geographical areas of deprivation

Organisations are expected to recruit “Answer Cancer Champions” - individuals who are committed to talking and raising awareness about cancer screening within their communities or organisations. Answer Cancer Champions will help challenge common myths and encourage people to take up Breast, Bowel and Cervical screening. Answer Cancer Champions must be at least 18 years old.

Evidence from the Answer Cancer programme suggests that organisations that are embedded within their communities are well-placed to positively engage with local people on the need for cancer screening. Meaningful engagement with local people may require a series of activities over an extended period of 6 to 12 months.

Who can apply? Voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations based in Greater Manchester can apply. 100% of the beneficiaries of this fund must be Greater Manchester residents.
