Aims/priorities: The funding aims to strengthen and modernise England’s free-to-client debt advice sector by supporting short-term projects that promote innovation, research, and collaboration. It is designed to help larger debt advice organisations and membership bodies test new ideas, explore emerging challenges, and trial approaches that can deliver long-term benefits. Through this fund, MaPS seeks to:
- Support research and discovery that builds the evidence base for future service transformation.
- Encourage sector-wide collaboration to tackle shared challenges and develop sustainable, scalable solutions.
- Test and learn from new tools, models, and approaches that improve access, efficiency, or quality of debt advice.
- Enable knowledge sharing and capacity building to drive lasting improvement across the sector.
Who can apply? The fund is open to larger debt advice organisations and membership bodies that support the free-to-client debt advice sector in England. Applicants can apply as an individual organisation or as the lead for a consortium.
The lead applicant must fulfil the following criteria:
Organisational Type:
- Not-for-profit organisations delivering free-to-client debt advice at scale.
- Commercial organisations delivering free-to-client debt advice.
- Membership bodies that support the debt advice sector.
Relationship with MaPS:
- Current MaPS grant or contract holders, or
- Recognised membership bodies supporting the sector, or
- Large-scale providers delivering free-to-client debt advice across England that are not currently funded by MaPS.
Financial Scale:
- Debt advice providers: annual turnover above £10 million.
- Membership bodies: turnover thresholds do not apply where they directly support sector delivery.
Service Criteria:
- Delivering or directly supporting the delivery of free-to-client debt advice in England.
- All funded projects must align with the MaPS Debt Advice Standards, even where the applicant is not currently funded by MaPS.
Grant amount: The total fund available is £750,000.
Grants of between £25,000 and £100,000 are available.
