Commonweal Housing - Call for New Ideas

Aims/priorities: The funding is for frontline not-for-profit organisations to undertake further research to establish the viability of their proposed housing and support solution. If the feasibility study proves successful, Commonweal works with its partners to develop the idea into a housing pilot project running for up-to 10 years, which the applicant organisations manage and operate, with Commonweal purchasing properties to test the model in full.

In 2024 the programme is expected to open twice. The first call (now open) will focus on issues facing young people. The second call (expected to open in late Summer/early Autumn) will focus on migration, asylum and human trafficking.

The current round is looking for ideas that tackle injustices faced by young people over the age of 18 who have had experience of least one of the following:

  • The care system.
  • Mental health problems or are neurodivergent.
  • Difficult experiences in the education system, particularly those who faced serial exclusion.

Who can apply? Not-for-profit organisations in the UK may apply.

There is particular interest in applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) led and BAME-focused organisations.

Applicants do not need to be experts in housing or have experience in delivering housing projects.

Commonweal is seeking partners who can demonstrate their understanding of the issue they are seeking to address; partners who will ‘own the problem and own the solution’ in terms of a commitment to see positive change.

Grant amount: Between £5,000 and £10,000 are available to carry out the feasibility study.

It is anticipated that four grants will be awarded.

Application process: Full details and an online application form can be found on the Commonweal Housing website.

There will be a one-hour webinar on 9 April at 12:00pm, where the application process  will be discussed in more detail. The webinar is focused on investigating the key drivers of youth homelessness. Registration is required and can be done via the Commonweal Housing website.

Deadline: Friday 19 April 2024, 5pm.
