BBC Children in Need

funding update

Aims/priorities: Funding is available to organisations that are supporting children and young people of 18 years and under who are experiencing disadvantage through:

  • Illness, distress, abuse or neglect.
  • Any kind of disability.
  • Behavioural or psychological difficulties.
  • Living in poverty or situations of deprivation.

Applications have to show how this funding will make a difference to children and young people’s lives during this crisis.

Applications are encouraged for:

  • Project delivery (Including staffing and salary costs).
  • Creative solutions to deliver much needed services.
  • Organisational costs to support stability and adaptation. (Including the day-to-day running costs of an organisation as opposed to specific project costs).

Who can apply? Main grants: Registered not-for-profit organisations that work with disadvantaged children and young people of 18 years and under. Organisations must have been active for at least three years.

Small grants: as above but will fund unregistered organisations.

All organisations must have a Governing Body with a minimum of 3 members that meets at least four times a year.

Governing documents clearly state:

  • Charitable aims that are suitable for work with children and young people in the UK
  • Dissolution clause/asset lock in place requiring assets are distributed to a not for profit organisation with similar charitable aims in the instance of closure
  • CICs must have an asset lock and must name the selected organisation which funds will be distributed to.
  • Safeguarding policies in the organisations name.

Grant amount: Main Grants may be up to 3 years in length and you can apply for £10,001 or more, per year.  You cannot apply for more than £40,000 per year and it is highly unlikely you would be awarded above £100k in total.

Small Grants may be up to 3 years in length and you can apply for up to (and including) £10,000 per year.  You will not be able to apply for more than £30,000 in total.

The small grant is not available to fund work supporting young people who have experienced Child Sexual Exploitation.

You can only apply for a main grant or a small grant – not both.

Application process: Online portal but recommended to read guidance notes first.
