Aims/priorities: The Active Travel Innovation Fund offers a share of £1 million in revenue funding to support small to medium-sized businesses and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in England. The fund aims to enable applicants to develop, deliver or scale interventions that increase walking, wheeling and cycling. Projects may involve innovative behaviour change initiatives, scaling proven solutions or developing new services that address gaps or opportunities in the sector.
Applications are invited for interventions that improve access to active travel, with a focus on underrepresented groups such as women and girls, ethnic minority communities, children, people with disabilities and those who are less physically active. Eligible projects could include community initiatives, partnerships between local authorities and businesses or digital tools that enhance safety and accessibility.
Successful applicants will receive grants and support from Active Travel England and the Government Grants Managed Service (GGMS), which may include guidance on monitoring and evaluation and help in building strategic partnerships. The fund also aligns with wider government objectives, including reducing pressure on the NHS, creating safer streets, promoting economic growth and supporting net zero initiatives.
The fund seeks applications that deliver measurable interventions contributing to more active travel across communities in England.
Who can apply? The Fund is open to small to medium-sized businesses and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) registered in the UK. Eligible applicants include sole traders, partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships, companies (for-profit, not-for-profit, or Community Interest Companies), and charities.
Applications can also be submitted by consortia, provided all partners meet the eligibility criteria, or by consortia that include unincorporated organisations in partnership with a UK-registered organisation. In such cases, the registered organisation must act as the lead applicant, taking responsibility for submitting the application and receiving any funding.
Lead organisations must meet the definition of a small or medium-sized enterprise, employing fewer than 250 people.
Interventions must be fully delivered and deployed in England. While eligible applicants may be registered (or reside) in the UK, interventions must be delivered in England.
Grant amount: The programme has a budget of £1 million. Individual grants of up to £100,000 are available for each successful project.
In addition to funding, successful applicants will receive practical support from ATE and the Government Grant Managed Service (GGMS). This could include help with building partnerships, connecting with new stakeholders or setting up ways to measure and track the success of their projects.
Application process: Applications are made online at the Government's Find a Grant website.
Applicants may only submit one bid as the lead organisation via the online portal.
Deadline: Friday 14 November 2025, (12:00).
