Volunteering opens the door to employment for Adil

Adil Hussain was referred through to our Volunteering Support service via the Rochdale Work and Skills’ Trailblazer programme - a programme Action Together has delivered alongside Rochdale Council's Work, Health and Skills Team.

After being out of work since 2015, Adil was struggling with his mental health and confidence, making the thought of returning to employment feel overwhelming. Interested in pursuing HGV work, Adil was looking for some support to help him rebuild his routine, gain experience, and take positive steps towards employment again.

In January 2026, our Rochdale Volunteer Support Officer, Hilson, met with Adil to explore the volunteering support and opportunities available to him. Together, they discussed his interests, career goals, and the types of experiences that could help rebuild both his confidence and skills within driving-related environments. Following these conversations, Reuse Littleborough and Rochdale Foodbank were identified as ideal starting points to help him move forward on his journey back into work.

Taking the first steps

Initially, Hilson connected Adil with Reuse Littleborough, where he quickly began taking positive steps forward. Adil independently attended his induction, joined the volunteer communication groups, and soon started volunteering regularly as a Van Driver’s Mate, giving his time at least three days each week.

As his confidence and routine continued to grow, Adil also began engaging with Rochdale Foodbank, progressing through their volunteering process and preparing to take on additional opportunities.

Turning experience into employment

Just one month later, Adil successfully secured paid employment — a huge milestone in his journey back into work. Although this meant he was unable to continue the process with Rochdale Foodbank, he has remained committed to volunteering with Reuse Littleborough alongside his new job, continuing to give back to his community while moving forward with his own career.

Building confidence through volunteering

Starting something new can feel daunting, especially after time away from employment. Adil has spoken positively about the support he received from Action Together, and the difference volunteering has made to his mental health and wellbeing. After spending more than a decade out of work, Adil said volunteering had given him a renewed sense of structure, purpose, and connection. Through his volunteering work he has gradually rebuilt his confidence and now has a brighter future ahead of him.
