Strand 2
Strand 2 of the of the South Asian Health Engagement Funding offered grants to organisations for the delivery of a programme of information/awareness raising to an established men’s or women’s group in the South Asian community, to raise awareness and promote health screenings specific to the group.
Investments awarded to the following groups are detailed below:
Strand 1, 2024-2025
Member Organisation | Amount Awarded | Investment Projects |
Apex Health and Wellbeing | £949.45 | The Apna Health Programme is a 6-week health project centred around classroom-based education to help increase awareness and knowledge that can be easily applied into the daily life and culture within the South Asian Community. Service users will also get a chance to talk about their experiences, concerns and have the opportunity to ask any questions. |
Castlemere Community Centre | £810 | Castlemere Community Centre (CCC) is a well-established centre in the heart of the South Asian communities, who use it for various community activities. We have a number of groups who meet regularly, and we would like to aim this project on these users as well as attracting new ones to benefit from this funding. From our pool of volunteers and some staff, we will dedicate their time to this project, and will work with these groups and individuals to raise awareness about the cardiovascular and cholesterol issues and check their blood pressure regularly and capture the data in a systematic way to assist the future use by Living Well. This project will also complement the health advice sessions the centre holds for the local community. |
Crossway Alliance CIC | £1,000 | The project is aimed at people of South Asian Origin living in Rochdale especially those at high risk of developing heart disease. Participants will attend monthly sessions which will provide an open place for people to meet talk about their health and concerns, get advice and information from professionals. In addition, they will learn about healthy choices around positive lifestyle, healthy eating, weight management, smoking cessation, diabetes, blood pressure, managing stress and sleep hygiene. |
Empowering Education CIC | £990 | We will therefore run two events: one women-only and one for men and women. (We are realistic about women attending mixed events.) The events will concentrate on ‘getting the message across’ with neither frills nor sophisticated presentations. The messaging will be plain and multi-lingual and the suggested actions simple and practical. We are ideally-placed to ensure that that these events take place not only in accessible and appropriate locations but also are conducted in a culturally appropriate way. The events will be supported by drop-in sessions where further information and advice and help with accessing health services can be provided and where Living Well and ourselves will be able to encourage participants to attend health checks and track the engagement’s impact. |
Zeal Empowerment Advocacy | £1,000 | After attending the Living Well Influencer Forum, we believe we can help the project by hosting an engaging event within the local South Asian community. We have already secured a venue for hosting the Heart Matters awareness day. This will be a 3 hour interactive event where participants will:

Awakening Minds | £2,000 | This will be a new initiative in the new year, in response to the pressing need for health awareness screening amongst young and older men. Beyond limits will aim to be a proactive approach to wellbeing within the South Asian demographic. It will be strategically designed to engage and empower men through a comprehensive 12-week health awareness programme. |
Cartwheel Arts | £2,000 | Cartwheel Arts will offer four sessions, over four weeks, with an experienced movement practitioner who can support the women to access regular physical activity as part of an established drop-in group. Through providing this exercise as an a social event, women may feel confident enough to access health screenings provided by staff at Deeplish Community Centre before the first and final sessions. These would include blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol checks by trained staffed and backed by their pharmacy partners. This project would provide the opportunity to access important health screenings and information about their own health which would enable them to make further decisions about their health; either consult a medical professional or consider lifestyle choices. |
£2,000 | We would like to pilot a new 16 week project with our Older Men's group, with the aim of enhancing physical activity and overall wellbeing through exercises and engaging games, with an incentive of a prize for participation. During the course of the project, we will raise awareness about health screenings specific to South Asian men, such as for bowel or prostate cancer. We will collaborate with local healthcare providers and experts who will be invited to deliver informative workshops or presentations stressing the importance of regular screenings and vaccinations. |
