OPAG's Window On The World

Oldham Play Action Group received £1,000 from the One Oldham Fund Children & Young People's Grant. This was used to fund a their 'stained glass windows' themed craft sessions.

Oldham Play Action Group works with all Oldham's diverse range of communities to extend the quality and quantity of play opportunities for children throughout the borough

OPAG hosted their Window On The World project sessions at Greenacres Community Centre during November and early December 2023. Children and young people joined to make the sticky backed plastic ‘stained glass windows’ to be used on OPAGs Instagram from 1st to 25th December 2023.

Children had great fun making them and some got their parents and grandparents involved too.

Here are a few of their comments:

  • ‘Being part of something big and I like my bit being part of it.’
  • ‘I did something I haven’t tried before, and I liked doing it.’
  • ‘proud of what I have made and how good it looks.’
  • ‘I’m going to make a pattern with the left over little bits, even that will look good when it is dark and the lights are on inside.’
  • ‘When will mine be on so I can tell my family to look out for it?’
  • ‘I can’t wait to get it up in my window, I want to put fairy lights all round it.’

Children enjoyed being involved in a short project that they did together, but in which they all made their own contribution to the whole. They enjoyed making something with a purpose that other people will see. They liked that it was only a short time before the pieces would be exhibited and thought it was a good way to countdown to Christmas. 25 families participated.

The children want us to look to identify a window that could hold a future more permanent piece as an activity next year, and are thinking of a theme.

Thanks to One Oldham Fund and Action Together for funding this project.
