Aims/priorities: The aim of the Fund is to leave a positive legacy to the communities impacted by road work done by National Highways.
The funding is for projects or initiatives located close to motorways and major roads that are maintained by National Highways and have been impacted by the roadworks or diversion routes.
The projects must meet at least one of the Fund's criteria:
- Economic prosperity – investing in new skills, employment and training opportunities.
- Improving the environment – making sustainable decisions that conserve natural resources and enhance ecosystems.
- Community wellbeing – addressing health-related issues and improving connectivity, amenities, education, and heritage programmes for communities.
- Equality, diversity, and inclusion – supporting the creation of a more equal society by increasing opportunities for under-represented groups.
Who can apply? Applications will be accepted from any non-profit group or organisation that is located geographically close to motorways and major roads (that are maintained by National Highways) and have been impacted by National Highways roadworks or diversion routes.
Grant amount: The total amount for the year is £304,000, with grants of between £500 and £10,000.
As the total amount is split throughout the year, only £30,400 is available for this round.
Application process: There is a two step application process:
- The first step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form to National Highways between 25 August and 1 September 2026 (12 noon).
- Those who are successful will be invited to submit a full application.
This will be on a first come, first served basis as a high level of interest is anticipated but only a small amount of funding is available.
Applications will be reviewed and discussed at a monthly National Highways Committee Meeting.
Applicants will be invited for a short slot to discuss their application and answer questions.
Following the meeting, applicants will be informed of the outcome within five working days.
Only one application relating to the same set of roadworks will be accepted each month.
Deadline: Tuesday, 1 September 2026 (12 noon).
