‘Future You’ is a free mentoring programme, delivered on behalf of Greater Manchester Combined Authority via funded by the European Social Fund. The programme is for 18-24 year olds who are classed as NEET (not in Education, Employment or Training). The young people are given a dedicated mentor who works with them 1:1 once a week for up to nine months, with a view to eventually progressing them into a job, apprenticeship, course, traineeship etc.

Because they have up to nine months to work with them, they can approach the mentoring from a more pastoral and holistic angle. Ultimately, they want whatever role they progress into to be sustainable, so the mentoring takes all factors into consideration. For instance, if the young person (YP) feels anxious about using public transport, they can do travel training with them to slowly build up their confidence and independence. If a young person comes to them and they are much closer to being ready to work, the mentoring sessions might focus on CV writing and mock job interviews. The idea is that the 1:1’s are bespoke and completely tailored to the YP’s specific needs.

They can meet the YP wherever they feel most comfortable –in their office, in a café/ community space or even in their home. Fundamentally, the programme is about providing people with the support they need to find their feet and take their next positive step as a young adult in modern Britain.
