You may have seen the Government's new 'Be Ready' campaign. This is a three-year campaign encouraging people to think about how they would manage if services such as electricity, water, phone or internet access were temporarily disrupted during storms, flooding, power cuts or other emergencies.
Some of the campaign advice focuses on gradually building up a small supply of household essentials. We recognise that this may not feel realistic, affordable or appropriate for everyone. People should only take actions that feel comfortable and achievable for their own circumstances.
The campaign also includes a number of free actions, including:
- Checking whether you or someone you know is eligible for the Priority Services Register which provides extra support for households during power and other utility outages.
- Keeping important contact details somewhere accessible
- Ensuring essential medication can be accessed if needed
- Knowing where to find trusted information during emergencies
- Talking with friends, family or neighbours about how you could support one another during disruption
Preparedness looks different for everyone. Taking even one or two small steps can help people feel more informed, connected and confident if disruption occurs.
The overall aim is to encourage those who are able to prepare to do so, helping emergency services and support organisations focus on people who may need additional assistance during an emergency.
