We are looking for a practical, hands-on volunteer with a passion for DIY and sharing skills to become our DIY Instructor Volunteer at Wildbrook. This role is all about passing on your knowledge to other volunteers and helping to build and maintain the structures that make our community food growing hub thrive.
Your skills will directly support the creation of safe, welcoming, and functional spaces for food growing, learning, and community activities.
Key information
- Volunteer: Weekly
- Availability: Wednesday AM, Wednesday PM, Thursday AM, Thursday PM, Friday AM
- Tasks: •	Lead and supervise volunteers in small DIY projects.
 •	Teach practical skills in safe tool use, woodwork, and basic construction.
 •	Help design and build site infrastructure, such as:
 o	Wooden benches and seating
 o	A gate for the pond area
 o	Raised beds for growing food
 o	Protective structures over raised beds (e.g. frames, netting, covers)
 o	Other small repairs and improvements around the site
 •	Ensure safe working practices and encourage teamwork.
 •	Support volunteers to gain confidence and new skills in DIY.
- Training: Health & Safety induction, including risk assessments and first aid procedures.
 Understanding safeguarding, inclusivity, and working with volunteers of mixed skill levels.
 Understanding the Role:
 Overview of the DIY Instructor’s responsibilities.
 Role boundaries: teaching, leading, and supervising safely (not contracting or heavy construction).
 Understanding volunteer engagement – supporting and encouraging learning by doing.
 Planning small projects and managing time effectively.
 Teaching & Leading Volunteers:
 How to plan and explain DIY tasks step by step.
 Demonstrating tool use and construction techniques safely.
 Supporting volunteers with different skill levels.
 Encouraging teamwork, communication, and confidence-building.
 Giving constructive feedback and celebrating progress.
- Requirements: Relevant qualification or training, Willing to travel by public transport or find own way to volunteering location
