Oldham Boxing's Family Projects

Oldham Boxing received £10,000 from the One Oldham Small Fund. This was used to fund projects that helped families reconnect.

A family of 3, consisting of a single mother and her two teenage sons, were struggling with communication, routine, and bonding. The mother had expressed feelings of isolation, while her sons were beginning to disengage from school and spend increased time in unstructured activities outside the home. The family lacked a shared sense of purpose and structure, leading to rising tensions and limited quality time.

The aim was to help the family reconnect, improve their physical and mental well-being, and build resilience. Oldham Boxing & Personal Development Centre invited them to participate in the Family Boxing Sessions, which are designed to encourage families to train together, communicate effectively, and grow stronger as a unit.

The family attended weekly sessions facilitated by qualified coaches in a supportive, inclusive environment. The sessions focused on:

  • Boxing Techniques – Teaching discipline and focus through structured training.

  • Team Building – Encouraging the family to work together on drills, pad work, and group challenges.

  • Mental Health Support – Using reflection time to address stress and improve emotional regulation.

  • Physical Fitness – Promoting exercise as a positive outlet for energy and frustration.

The coaches regularly checked in with the family to set small, achievable goals, such as attending consistently and mastering certain exercises together.

Over the course of the family sessions:

  • Improved Family Bonding: The family began working together as a team, communicating more effectively, and celebrating small victories.

  • Physical and Mental Well-being: The sons’ school attendance and focus improved, as the sessions provided an outlet for their energy and emotions. The mother reported feeling healthier and more confident.

  • Positive Routine: The family incorporated regular exercise and quality time into their weekly routine, strengthening their bond outside the gym.

  • Resilience and Confidence: Both teenagers became more confident, showing improved behaviour at home and in school, while their mother felt more connected to her community.

The family now attends one of our other regular sessions.

Testimonial from the Mother: "This program gave us the structure and connection we desperately needed. I’ve seen a massive change in my boys, and we finally feel like a team again."
