Following the 2011 Census, it was estimated that there are approximately 24,000 carers living in Oldham. Carers Week aims to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

OSAB have recently shared an essential 7-Minute Briefing about the importance of identifying and valuing carers with all partner organisations in Oldham. This briefing was produced following two statutory safeguarding reviews which identified the needed for greater awareness and recognition of unpaid carers and subsequently a need to ensure appropriate support is in place for them. Take a look here. Also, the Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have produced a quick guide to supporting people who provide unpaid care for adults with health or social care needs. Take a look here.
