Cancer & Inequalities Fund

Aims/priorities: The Cancer and Inequalities Fund is inviting applications from VCSE organisations which will do two things.

a) Firstly, focus on the marginalised and underserved population groups who are statistically more likely to present with cancer at later stages. These population groups are:

  • People from lower socio-economic groups
  • People with learning disabilities
  • People with sensory and/or physical disabilities
  • People with mental ill-health & illness
  • Racially marginalised communities
  • LGBTQ+ community
  • Older people
  • Men

b) Secondly, applications must also propose activities that support early cancer diagnosis activity through:

i) Targeted signs and symptom awareness: We know that certain groups have a higher risk of developing certain cancers, for example, Black men are 2-3 times more likely to develop prostate cancer. Having targeted and appropriate resources to engage those communities with increased risk Page 4 of 12 profiles and raise awareness of early signs and symptoms of particular cancers is vital in improving early diagnosis rates.

ii) Improve access to appropriate, effective, and timely healthcare for their chosen community by reducing barriers and empowering people to access healthcare. An example of this could be to support people in their conversations with their GP surgery (e.g., translation or support) when they experience early signs and symptoms, or this could be to extend your patient transport service to include outpatient appointments for those on urgent cancer referral pathways. Some communities report that they feel that the GP practice doesn’t currently meet their needs. iii) Educate and empower communities: Understanding and knowing how to access timely and appropriate healthcare is a significant barrier for some people in some communities. We know the healthcare system is complex and empowering people to be able to access and navigate will improve early diagnosis rates. An example of this could be to produce walk walk-through video to a GP appointment for a neurodiverse audience or in a particular community language.
