LGBT+ History Month 2024 | Cllr Louie Hamblett

This week, as part of  LGBT+ History Month 2024, we caught up with Cllr Louie Hamblett.

Cllr Louie Hamblett is the only openly gay Councillor on Oldham Council since being elected in 2019.

Here is what Louie had to say...

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, I’m Louie. I’m the only openly gay Councillor on Oldham Council, and I am also the only autistic Councillor too.

I live in High Crompton, with my partner and my cat.

I currently chair Oldham Pride which is a voluntary post, and I am proud to say this year we are about the celebrate our 20th anniversary since Oldham pride was founded.

I enjoy gaming, reading, going out with friends, and exploring new places.

I also enjoy helping in my community, both where I live and wider. I never shy away from difficult tasks in front of me.

What have you done for your community which you would like people to know about?

I have helped to raise the profile of Oldham Pride considerably since 2020.

What does LGBT+ History Month mean to you?

To never let the past be repeat of the present or future and teach our younger generation to always campaign for a better change for our LGBTQ community.

What change would you like to see in Oldham that would benefit the LGBTQ+ community?

Greater support and a wider understanding of acceptance and not to fear the community. We don’t have an agenda, we all want to live side by side as equals and to be treated as equals and celebrate our achievements.

And finally, what would you say to LGBTQ+ people in Greater Manchester to inspire them to make a difference in the community or wider?

Love is equal and pure... never forget that.
