We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and responsible individuals who are willing to take an active part within their community and aid their local library service. Essential qualities, skills and experience are as follows: A reliable, confident and responsible individual, with enthusiasm and effective communication and interpersonal skills. Able to commit to two regular customers every 4 weeks. Have a patient and approachable manner. Ability to empathise with older people and people with disabilities. Should be physically fit, be able to climb stairs and carry bags to deliver books to customers' homes. Have the ability to cope with the duties and responsibilities of the role and the associated environment, including an understanding of health and safety. Able to follow guidelines/instructions. Initiative and the ability to work without supervision. Willing to learn new knowledge and skills. The aim of the Home Library Service volunteer is to be a friendly face within the community and to help promote the library and its service to those that are housebound and unable to visit on their own. It is equally about providing conversation and company to those who cannot get out and about in their community. Training and Support: Volunteers will receive induction and training prior to starting in the role. They will also have a named supervisor who will provide ongoing support. If you love books and people, have half a day to spare each month and live in the Oldham area then Oldham Council Libraries need your help. Volunteers working for the Home Library Service choose and deliver books to housebound people and those who for reasons of ill-health or disability cannot visit the library themselves. Volunteers call on one or two Home Library Service customers once a month at a time convenient to themselves and spend time having a chat to the customer about what they have read and what they might like to read. Books that the volunteer has selected on a previous visit are then returned to the library and a month later the volunteer selects a new set of titles to be delivered. They may also use the library computer system (alongside staff) to reserve items that the customer might enjoy from stock in another library or follow up customer requests for individual titles. This will involve: Choosing or collecting books and other items for library at Home customers. Pack and label materials in bags or boxes ready for delivery Deliver books and other items to the housebound. Assist with stock maintenance and re-shelving books. Use the self-service machines. Use 8 catalogue to request items. Report any concerns about Library at Home customer's health, safety and wellbeing, to the supervisor or other relevant body. Ensure that the customer's profile is kept up to date by informing library staff of any relevant changes to their requirements. Help with any consultation with your group of customers. Promoting relevant library 16s and activities with the housebound. Maintaining confidentiality as appropriate. Helping staff to promote and extend this service.
