HOST (Home-Start Oldham, Stockport, Tameside) is a life enhancing charity that empowers parents to give their children the best possible start in life. We are one of the largest Home-Starts in the UK, supporting over 4000 families a year through a variety of projects; parents supporting parents with a child under the age of five, breastfeeding support services at two hospitals, speech and language work, reaching out to dads and an innovative parent/infant mental health project. The people we support are often those who are reluctant to engage with services and who struggle to cope due to lack of confidence, poor mental health, poverty, social isolation and poor parenting skills. We help them to build confidence and resilience through non-judgemental support that takes place at a time that suits them and where they feel most comfortable. We are seeking to recruit up to four trustees who can steer HOST through its next stages of development. Interest from people with business development, finance (treasurer) and fund raising backgrounds are particularly welcome. HOST has an income of around £1m and a staff of over 40. The Board meets in the early evening every six weeks and is supported by two sub-committees, Finance/HR and Quality Assurance.

About the host organisation

Hosted by: Home-Start Oldham, Stockport & Tameside
Organisation Profile: We are a local, independent charity operating in Oldham, Stockport & Tameside - one of 269 Home-Start schemes operating in the UK. At the heart of each Home-Start’s work are our home-visiting volunteers. Volunteers help families with young children deal with the challenges they face by providing regular one-to-one emotional and practical support tailored to each family. A child’s early family life is vitally important in their development, and has a strong influence on their future life chances. Children who are raised in a stable, loving, family environment are more likely to have a positive and healthy future. Home-Start works because our volunteers are parents. They understand how hard it can be. They work alongside parents, in their own homes, to help them learn to cope with the stresses and strains of life and make sure they have the skills, confidence and strength they need to nurture their children. We also support families in groups, hold day trips and Christmas parties and help them to access local services, as well as lots of other support.
