This is Volunteers' Week! We are meeting some of our emergency volunteers each day this week to find out what they’re doing, and why they do it.

Peter Lockwood is a Tameside Neighbourhood Volunteer and Miles of Smiles Driver

Peter Lockwood has been volunteering with Action Together as a Miles of Smiles driver for over 3 years. Due to the pandemic Peter found that he was unable to continue volunteering as a Miles of Smiles Driver. Despite this, he wanted to continue supporting his community, more so during this difficult time.

Peter has been out in the community collecting and delivering food donations for the local foodbanks. He has also supported vulnerable and isolated people by doing their shopping for them.

Why have you chosen to volunteer?

I have been volunteering for a long time now. Supporting my community and the people in it is something that has always been important to me and I find it to be very fulfilling. Volunteering is a useful thing to do and I had the time, so I chose to donate it.

How have we approached the tasks?

I wanted to keep busy. I did not want to stay at home and wait for the pandemic to end. I am fit and healthy and able to help. I have enjoyed transporting the food and I am happy to get stuck in and support with anything I can.

What would you say to someone looking to help out during this time?

I get lots of satisfaction from volunteering. I go to bed at night and sleep well knowing that I have spent my time helping others and doing good.
