How To Retain Volunteers

Sarah Pearce, Action Together's Development and Volunteer Co-Ordinator in Rochdale, has written a blog for us with tips on retaining volunteers:

Throughout the coronavirus crisis we have seen exceptional examples of volunteering. In just four days following its launch, the portal for the NHS army of volunteers was completely overwhelmed. Here at Action Together, we’ve had an incredible 1,300 volunteers sign up to help out in the crisis across Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside. From Captain Tom Moore walking his way to raise £26.8 Million; to the Mutual Aid movement, forming overnight, to support their neighbours who suddenly found essentials items had been inaccessible, I think we can all agree that we see the power in volunteering.

Many of our fantastic members have repurposed their own volunteers and activities to lead the way in supporting those who have needed help during this time. Many of us believe this has tapped into a national understanding of neighbourliness and solidarity, which we don’t want to lose once people go back to work.

Take a look at our training on Retaining Volunteers by my wonderful colleagues Laura and Phil, and read our Top 5 Tips for retaining volunteers below:

There are a few things you can do to manage your volunteers and encourage them to stay on and keep giving their time to do good.

1. Keep in touch

Whether it is a phone call, Facebook or WhatsApp group. Make sure you are in touch with your volunteers – give them updates about what is coming up but also take the time to listen to what is going on in their lives as well. Staying connected is important.

2. Training

Firstly, ensure your volunteer has the appropriate training for their role so that they feel safe and well-equipped to carry out their responsibilities as well as increasing their confidence. Following that, find out what your volunteers are interested in and would like to receive training about. What new skills would they like to learn that could also benefit your organisation?

3. Be Flexible

As the lockdown eases, many are returning to work or planning to – have a conversation with your volunteers about how they might like to be involved moving forward. What hours they will be available and what support do they think might be needed in a ‘living with Covid’ post lockdown world. Will there be more support needed online? What other skills do they have that could be used?

4. Volunteer Agreement

This is a document that makes it clear what the volunteer can expect from your organisation and what you can expect from the volunteer. Again, the more understanding your volunteers have the more likely they will continue to volunteer. It usually sits alongside a role description and volunteer policy – all of which you can get support with from Action Together!

5. Reward and Recognition

A simple one but you must never forget to say THANK YOU! You can write notes, social media posts or give out treats but do take the time to make it personal and reference specific things they have done which have really helped your organisation.
