A new toolkit has been launched to help people get out on a short walk every day.

The Greater Manchester Daily Mile Toolkit is bursting with tips, tools and motivational ideas to help adults and families in Tameside and Glossop to walk more, outside of school settings, while adhering to the latest COVID government guidelines.

Backed by Tameside Council and NHS Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), it aims to support people to do a Daily Mile however and wherever suits them with three tailor-made versions: an Individual and Family Toolkit, a Toolkit for Employers and a Community Organisation Toolkit.

The Individual and Family Toolkit supports people to take their first step towards a Daily Mile walk from home, either alone or with others.

The Employers and Workplace Toolkit supports employers to encourage and enable employees to take a short walk each day to help employees connect and enhance their wellbeing.

The Community Organisation Toolkit is designed for local groups, organisations and service providers to support them to build a Daily Mile into their work with local communities.

With resources including activity sheets, step trackers, challenges, promotion templates and much more, there is something to support everyone to walk more.

The Toolkit, developed by GM Walking in collaboration with local communities and employers, is an exciting next step toward Greater Manchester’s ambition to be world’s first Daily Mile City-Region.  Following January’s milestone achievement of 500 primary schools signed up to The Daily Mile, the creation of this toolkit now aims to grow The GM Daily Mile even further; taking it into homes, communities and workplaces across the city-region.

Dr Asad Ali, Co-Chair at NHS Tameside and Glossop CCG said: “This is a great Toolkit helping you to become more active.  Inactivity is described by the Department of Health as a ‘silent killer’.  Walking is a free form of exercise which can reduce your risk of major illness, such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and cancer.

“You don’t need a gym membership to burn calories either.  You should be aiming to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of activities and walking can be one of those ways.  Walking outdoors is also a great way to boost your mental wellbeing.”

Local people are encouraged to share their Daily Mile experiences and photos using the hashtag #GMDailyMile and tagging @TamesideCouncil and @TGCCG.
