70 years of the NHS
As part of plans to mark the NHS’s 70th birthday in July, BBC1’s The One Show has launched an award to say ‘thank you’ to NHS staff and volunteers who have gone the extra mile.
With support from TV presenter Angela Rippon and the Patients Association, the popular show is asking patients, their families and staff to nominate in five award categories: children and young people’s care; healthcare; nursing; lifetime achievement; and, unsung hero. Nominations close on 5 April. Supporting older people with hearing loss in care settings
National charity Action on Hearing Loss is tackling loneliness and social isolation in older people with hearing loss as part of a nationwide initiative. Hearing loss is a major public health issue. It affects more than 11 million people across the UK – that’s one in six of us. The most common type of hearing loss is age-related hearing loss, which develops gradually with age and it is estimated that 75% of people in a care home have hearing loss – and that this will increase to 80% by 2032. Previous research (A World of Silence) showed how if the hearing loss of care home residents is identified and managed effectively, there is a real chance of improving their quality of life, by reducing loneliness and social isolation, and by improving their overall health and wellbeing.
