Items which should not be routinely available on prescription in primary care: consultation

NHS Clinical Commissioners (the people who pay for our health services) and NHS England have developed a proposal to improve patient care by no longer routinely prescribing 18 medicines which are either:
• Clinically ineffective, unsafe, or not cost effective; or
• Where the NHS can offer a clinically proven alternative for patients.
The 18 medicines are:
Co-proxamol
Dosulepin
Prolonged-release Doxazosin (also known as Doxazosin Modified Release)
Immediate Release Fentanyl
Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Herbal Treatments
Homeopathy
Lidocaine Plasters
Liothyronine
Lutein and Antioxidants
Omega-3 Fatty Acid Compounds
Oxycodone and Naloxone Combination Product
Paracetamol and Tramadol Combination Product
Perindopril Arginine
Rubefacients (excluding topical NSAIDs)
Once Daily Tadalafil
Travel Vaccines
Trimipramine

While many doctors and other prescribers are no longer prescribing these 18 medicines for patients, the evidence shows there is variation across the country and the NHS currently spends £141 million p.a. on these medicines.
Clearly the NHS needs a fair and consistent national position for everyone so NHS England and NHS clinical commissioners are putting this out to public consultation.
Subject to the outcome of the consultation, guidance on the initial 18 medicines is likely to be published by NHS England and CCGs will be asked to consider its implementation with their communities, ensuring they take into account their legal duties to advance equality and to reduce health inequalities.
The proposed guidance would not remove the clinical discretion of the prescriber in deciding what is in accordance with their professional duties.
NHS England and NHSCC are also seeking people’s views on whether a wider list of 3,200 products that are available over-the-counter, without prescription, may be considered appropriate for future restriction. At this stage, they are seeking views generally on this element, to inform the next phase of the work by the clinical working group which will consider this category of products.
The consultation is open from 21 July to 21 October 2017:

Wheelchair Survey

The Greater Manchester Neuro Rehab and Stroke Operational Delivery Networks are a collaborative partnership of NHS providers of neuro-rehabilitation and stroke services in the Greater Manchester region, who work closely with clinicians, patients and families, commissioners and other stakeholders to improve services.
One of the projects they are currently reviewing is wheelchair service provision across the region. They know that having the right wheelchair at the right time is essential to enable people to remain as independent as possible, and play an active role in all aspects of their lives. Not having the right chair when it is needed or having an unsuitable wheelchair can impact on health and well-being, and may affect the care
and support individuals may need in the future.
They are collaborating with third sector organisations and charities, including the MS Society, Motor Neurone Disease
Association, Stroke Association, Parkinson’s UK, Headway, amongst others, in order to evaluate the impact of current wheelchair provision on service users and carers.
The survey is looking for feedback of your experience with the wheelchair services across Greater Manchester in the last two years. You must have a neurological condition e.g. multiple sclerosis, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, motor neurone disease, brain tumour, spinal cord injury, in order to complete this survey. It is aimed at adults (18+) and can be completed by the wheelchair user or a carer, based on your most recent experience. Most of the questions just require
a tick box response but there are some which you may need to add comments to.
Please be as honest as possible with your responses and comments, as this will be useful for guiding any future improvements to the services.
You can give your answers anonymously if you prefer. If you do opt to add your contact details, please be assured that this will be kept secure and confidential, and will not be shared with any third parties not involved in this review.
The survey will close on 6th November 2017 and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
You can submit your survey electronically using the link below:
www.gmnrodn.org.uk/project/wheelchair-provision/
You can request a paper/electronic version or complete the survey over the phone by contacting Lisa Chadwick on 0161 2062109 / Lisa.Chadwick@srft.nhs.uk

Caring for or supporting someone living with dementia: AGE UK six week 'Building Mental Health Resilience and Wellbeing' programme can help

AGE UK six week ‘Building Mental Health Resilience and Wellbeing’ programme can help.
Caring for someone who has Alzheimer’s or one of the other forms of dementia can be rewarding but equally, it can take its toll mentally, emotionally and physically. In response to the challenges carers face, Tameside, Oldham and Glossop Mind and AGE UK Tameside have developed a six week Building Mental Health Resilience and Wellbeing programme which aims to provide carers with the tools to better navigate through the stresses of caring for someone with dementia.
Mind’s definition of resilience: The ability to adapt in the face of challenging circumstances
Caring for the person you care for
It is known that carers struggle to take part in activities if the person they care for can’t or doesn’t want to b left6 alone. To help overcome what can be a huge barrier, AGE UK Tameside and TOG Mind will  will provide a free engaging and stimulating activity session or the person you support while you are in your session.
The next ‘Building Mental Health Resilience and Wellbeing’ programme starts 20th October 2017. It will take place for two hours a week over six weeks.

New CQC research reveals lack of awareness over right to choose where to give birth

New research commissioned by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found that more women must be made aware of their right to choose their birth hospital.
The research, which surveyed over 1,000 women who had given birth in England in the last three years, found that 40% either weren’t aware or didn’t feel they had a choice about their birth hospital.
Of those who choose their hospital 53% stated this was a ‘very important’ decision, however 57% spent less than an hour choosing theirs, suggesting a lack of awareness about the amount of information that is available to help make an informed choice.
The CQC is encouraging all expectant parents to understand their right to choose where to give birth and to use CQC inspection reports in order to help make an informed, considered decision.
Heidi Smoult, Deputy Chief Inspector at the Care Quality Commission, explains: “Pregnancy is a very exciting time but it can also be daunting and many women can feel at their most vulnerable. Women have the option to have a hospital, birthing centre or home birth.
It’s vital that all women know they have a choice over where they give birth. It’s a big decision and while advice from family and friends can be useful, it’s important that expectant parents know there’s free independent information available to help them.
Our inspection reports provide detailed scrutiny of all aspects of maternity care - we urge all prospective parents to do their research to help ensure they have the best possible birth experience.”
The CQC found the top influencing factors effecting where women choose to give birth were the hospital being close to home (65%), followed by hospital cleanliness and safety (55%), a good reputation (39%) and caring staff (36%). CQC inspection reports include detailed information asking these key questions and the research found that of those who did use the inspection reports 95% found them helpful in informing their birth choice decision.
The research also found a third (34%) of mums spent less than an hour choosing the type of birth they want and making a birth plan, and 15% didn’t do this at all.
As part of the campaign the CQC also wants new parents to share their experiences of maternity services. Heidi continues: “We really want to hear about women’s real-life experiences as this information supports our monitoring, inspecting and rating of services and helps us provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive picture of the current quality of maternity care being provided at a local level across the country. We urge new parents to help other parents by sharing their experiences with us.”
