Are You diabetic? What are your experiences of diabetic eye screening?

Healthwatch in Greater Manchester are helping NHS England to find out what people think about diabetic eye screening.
If you are diabetic we’d be grateful if you would take 10 minutes to complete a short questionnaire..
Here is the link to the questionnaire:                   https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PMNGSKQ

If you would prefer a paper copy with a FREEPOST envelope, you can either call our office on 0161 667 2526 or email us on info@healthwatchtameside.co.uk
The survey will close on 14th May 2017
Thank you for your time!

Tameside Oldham and Glossop MIND -Keen to be a Youth Mental Health First Aider?

Our Youth Mental Health First Aid course is an internationally recognised course designed specifically for those people that teach, work, live with or care for young people aged 8 to 18 years and is free to those in the Tameside and Glossop area which have been funded by the Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group.
You will learn how to:
•Provide information, tools and techniques to promote a young person’s mental and emotional wellbeing
•Support a young person who might be experiencing mental and emotional distress.
MHFA won’t teach you how to be a therapist, but you will be able to say you’re a Youth Mental Health First Aider.
What will I learn?
Our Youth MHFA course is split into four manageable chunks. These are:
•What is mental health?
•Depression and anxiety
•Suicide and psychosis
•Self-harm and eating disorders.
Within each section there is clear focus on the issues faced by young people, including bullying/cyber bullying and substance misuse. The course also teaches the importance of promoting wellbeing and protective factors.
How will I learn?
The sessions will be a mix of presentations, discussions, and group work activities. Our instructors provide a safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the whole course. If you don’t feel comfortable joining in certain parts, then there is no pressure to.
Due to some of the sensitive subjects of our courses, we limit numbers to 16 people. We want everyone to feel safe and our instructors can help if people find some parts particularly difficult.
Everyone who attends the course will receive a copy of the Youth MHFA manual and workbook, which are both excellent support resources. When you have completed the course you will receive a certificate to confirm that you are a trained Youth Mental Health First Aider.
Who can attend?
The course is for workers in the Tameside and Glossop area and is relevant for people who teach, work, live with and care for 8 to 18 year olds, including young people themselves, although parental consent is required below the age of 16. This is a fantastic opportunity for Tameside and Glossop workers as this course normally costs up to £300 per place. Why not check out what a few people have said about MHFA?
If you do not fit this criteria get in touch with training@togmind.org (and use the subject header “YMHFA”) for information about other options.

Changes to opening times of The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary have provided 24-hour support to adults experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal thoughts or are in crisis. The Sanctuary offers a space to talk and assistance with coping after the initial crisis.
However, the times they are opening are changing and Healthwatch have been asked to pass on the information about these changes.
This is the information we received:
“I am writing to inform you that the opening hours of the Sanctuary will soon change across Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside and Glossop. From Friday 2 June, clients will no longer be able to call us during the day, from 6am – 8pm. Overnight, we will continue to provide crisis support, 365 days a year, from 8pm – 6am.
We are working closely with our clients to minimise any impact these changes may have.
The changes to our opening hours are in response to commissioners’ intentions, who feel there is a sufficient level of support and alternatives that are readily available to residents during the day. Therefore, funding for the daytime service has ceased.
This is not a reflection on the quality of support that clients receive, or our staff, but with the level of demand for the service during the day.
Going forward, we are ensuring that anyone who has frequently called us is in contact with the right service for them. A range of telephone support lines are readily available across Greater Manchester, which we encourage people to call if they need support during the day.
These include:
The Samaritans: 116 123 (24/7)
Mind: 0300 123 3393 (9am - 6pm, Monday - Friday)
Papyrus: 0800 068 4141 (10am - 10pm, everyday)
Support Line: 01708 765 222 (5pm - 7pm, Monday to Saturday)
Overnight (from 8pm - 6am) the Sanctuary will continue to provide an appropriate place of support to adults (18+) across Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside and Glossop, on 0300 003 7029.

Willow Wood Family Support Services - Can you help them continue to grow?

Willow Wood Hospice is renowned as a centre of excellence, and our specialist care is offered not only to those living with a life-limiting illness in Tameside and Glossop, but is also extended to their families and loved ones.

For some years now we have offered counselling to adult relatives of patients, and we are now extending that service to children aged five to thirteen years of age.

It can be very difficult for children to express their emotions, especially to other family members who are also grieving.  To help them work through the process and come to terms with the changes in their life, Nicola Dobson, Family Support Services Lead, has set up a child centred counselling service, based in a dedicated room at the PAD in Stalybridge.

As with all of Willow Wood’s services, this is free, and is available to any child who has, or has had, a family member as one of our patients.  There will be an initial consultation with a parent or guardian, followed by 12 weekly sessions, each lasting 50 minutes.  Nicola is also planning to extend this counselling service to those aged between 13 and 17 from the beginning of 2018.

If you would like to find out more, or to book an initial consultation, please contact Nicola on 0161 330 1100 or email her at nicola.dobson@willowwood.info.

Public Health Tameside - Picture of Health focus this month is Mental Health

Public Health look at the way people in Tameside live, as a whole population.  Every month they are sharing facts and figures about health in Tameside, as well as giving us information on how we can help ourselves and the people around us to live well.
This month the focus is on mental health.
Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem and we know good mental health is fundamental to healthy, happy and prosperous lives.
