Here's some more information about the PhD Study

The study seeks to explore the experiences of using a selected form of off-the-shelf GPS tracking technology within dementia care, from the perspectives of individuals living with dementia and those individuals who provide care to them

Informed by Experts

This study recognises that those living with dementia and their care partners are experts through experience, and are based placed to make decisions on the use of GPS

The main study itself was informed through a consultation phase, whereby both individuals living with dementia and their care partners viewed a range of devices.

Using off-the-shelf tech

What separates this study from previous studies in dementia research is the use of 'off-the-shelf' GPS products. The devices are not tailor-made for a specific use or function, but carry with them a similar or identical specification to those with a defined use, These 'off-the-shelf' products are available at a fraction of the cost of those that are targeted at use within dementia care.

From the outset, research showed the rising costs faced by those living with dementia and their care partners, on top of the increasing percentages of older people are living in poverty in the UK

Independence and freedom

This study seeks to analyse how participants of the study use the selected device, considering the range of activities undertaken, the frequency of use as well as the perceived benefits and limitations of the technology itself.

Methodology

How the study works? This research projects utilises the following methods of data collection:

Consultation session

A focus group to collect data regarding the views and opinions of people living with dementia and their care partners on a wide range of off-the-shelf GPS devices. This data informed the main study by selecting the device to be used.

Interviews

Both before and after a period of using the selected GPS device, participants will attend interviews to gather data related to intial opinions of the technology followed by post experience of using the devices

Period of use

Participants will be given 1 x “V-Multitracker Trakisafe” GPS device along with training and guidance on using the device and be asked to use the device alongside their everyday lives for a period of 3 months.
