Glossop Event - Tameside and Glossop Self Care Alliance

Registration is closed for this event
We are inviting voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations who have a role in providing the health and well being outcomes for people in Tameside and Glossop to join us to help shape the development of the Self Care Alliance.

Action Together is leading the development of the Self Care Alliance along with Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Foundation Trust, as part of Care Together, the programme working to transform the way we meet people’s health and care needs.  As part of this work, we are looking at the best ways to support people in Tameside and Glossop to manage their health and health conditions as effectively as possible.

The Self Care Alliance is very important to help us to work together on this, helping us to harness the full breadth of skills, experience and resources, not just from within the statutory sector but also the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector and within people’s homes, families and communities.   It will also provide a key route for strategic partnership and so it is important that any groups, organisations or agencies who have a role in improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for people in Tameside and Glossop help us to shape this work.

An initial meeting held in July was a great success with many partners contributing their thoughts around what ‘Self Care’ means to them and the communities they work in, also starting to develop ideas about what the Alliance should look like and the key themes.  We do acknowledge that we had less groups and organisations from Glossop at the initial meeting and so before the next meeting of the Alliance in December, we wanted to give Glossop groups and organisations the opportunity to come together in Glossop, to be involved before the Alliance work starts to gain momentum.

The thoughts and feedback from our initial meeting have been collated, in summary partners identified that Self Care has a number key components/important areas which fit into the following categories:

  • Wellbeing/Feeling Good – Achieving work/life balance, talking to others, counselling, connecting on social media, positive attitude and flexible services.
  • Eating Well/Nourishing Diet – Whole foods where possible, reduce processed foods, good diet helps with low mood, formal groups can help some people.
  • Exercise/Moving More – Pleasurable movement, helps with low mood, reduces stress, lots of activities to engage in and can be used to help manage long term conditions.
  • Social factors/Connecting with Others – Important to talk to others, friends, social media, travel, self-help groups and books.
  • Managing illness’s and long-term conditions/Taking Control – Education and knowledge, support groups, stopping smoking, getting the right help at the right time, using services appropriately, learning to manage long term conditions.

Partners also contributed their thoughts on how the Self Care Alliance may look in Tameside and Glossop and the important elements which would enable its success, the overarching themes included:

  • Improved communications and information sharing across agencies
  • A local directory of services
  • A cultural shift – breakdown the fear of working together
  • Staff support and the practical tools to deliver self-care
  • Appropriate monitoring and recording of outcomes
  • An understanding that funding may be needed to deliver elements of the programme
  • The recognition and valuing of all partners, their offer, skills and services
  • Inclusivity, accessible language

The aim of this meeting is to build on the great work already started and begin to shape the Self Care Alliance into something tangible and practical. The focus on our next meeting in December will be to:

  • To work together to agree on a single vision for self-care in Tameside and Glossop -  One which can inspire the Alliance in promoting a unified and consistent approach which aligns with the principles of the System Wide Self-Care Programme.
  • To discuss the key messages/themes of self-care - We will explore the key messages and themes that have been identified, looking at innovative ways to promote these in day to day practice.
  • To develop work groups to enable us to move forward with these key messages/themes – We will begin to bring partners together to develop thematic work groups to drive the Alliance forward, this will include looking at both the What’s and the How’s.

We are really keen to see a wide range of partners involved in the Alliance, representing the diverse communities of Tameside and Glossop. We understand that some of our partners in Glossop may not have attended the previous event and therefore we would love to hear from you and get your input and involvement. It is hoped that the attendees will have the time and capacity to be active members of the Alliance to ensure its success as it moves forward.
