Ambition for Ageing Podcast

Ambition for Ageing has launched it’s very first podcast, and it’s available now for you to listen to.

Over seven episodes, it will bring together different guests each week to discuss all aspects of ageing, looking at everything from social isolation and loneliness to the benefits of ageing and building age-friendly places. Join host Kirsty each week alongside academics and policy makers, researchers, front line delivery staff and of course, older people themselves.

Episodes will be promoted weekly on its social media channels, but if you can’t wait, you can listen to the whole series now on Spotify, iTunes, Google Podcasts or your favourite podcast host.

The episodes are:

• Episode 1: Why do we address social isolation? with guests Paul McGarry, Head of the Ageing Hub at Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Kate Jopling, policy and strategy consultant and former director of the campaign to end loneliness. This episode also features short discussions with Ageing Better partners from across the country.
• Episode 2: Why are there so many myths around loneliness? with guests Professor Christina Victor, the professor and gerontology and public health at Brunel University and Richard Dowsett from the National Lottery Community Fund
• Episode 3: How can we work with communities to build capacity? where we catch up with community workers in local neighbourhoods to discuss what already needs to exist in a place to begin with, what support to build capacity looks like, how inequalities existing in place can impact on building community capacity and more.
• Episode 4: Why are places and spaces important for communities to survive and thrive? where we discuss the importance of social infrastructure and the dark side of social capital with Dr. Sophie Yarker from the University of Manchester and Susanne Martikke from GMCVO.
• Episode 5: What do we know about how inequality drives social isolation? where we take both a practical and academic approach to inequalities, featuring interviews with Professor James Nazroo from the University of Manchester and we feature a conversation between development officers on how this works in practice.
• Episode 6: Stories from older people on the impact of inequality and importance of diversity, featuring personal stories from older people from Pride in Ageing LGBT group, the Greater Manchester BAME Network and the Greater Manchester Older People’s Network about the impact of inequality and importance of diversity.
• Episode 7: Is a truly accessible evaluation process possible? (Bonus), we focus our attention on running research programmes and explore the question of whether the nature of research can indirectly influence its findings and ask whether we can be both inclusive and accurate when researching people who are socially isolated
